Herbs To Get Over Being Sick – Part 2

Herbs to Get Over Being Sick

Cold-FluGetting over being sick and preventing more illness is based on a lifestyle change. That means lowering stress, getting enough sleep and eating the right foods and avoiding the wrong ones. Click here for part 1 on the complete list of lifestyle changes and vitamins / supplements to take to avoid being sick.

Herbs and Spices to Add:

Warming herbs and spices heat up the body, boost circulation, and speed up metabolism. All of these actions have a positive effect on the immune system, and adding them to your diet can help fight colds and flu.

3-4 years old boy with cold and flu remedy on whiteTry using these in hot water as tea, or just on your food:

  • Cayenne is the most powerful circulatory propellant known. It simply sends the antibiotic and disease fighting properties of the other herbs where they’re needed most.
  • Ginger
  • Turmeric
  • Cinnamon
  • Cardamom
  • Cloves
  • Paprika

These will strengthen your immunity for any oncoming illness. My favorite is ginger, turmeric, and Cayenne. Click here for how to make a powerful ginger and turmeric tea.

With Cayenne, I like to put organic Cayenne powder in water with lemon. This is a great detox as well. (click photo on left or link)

− Nettle Leaf

Some natural doctors say this is the only herb needed for illness treatment. (click photo to the left for link) It contains large amounts of vitamins and trace minerals and helps the body stay hydrated and remove toxins. In a tea with Red Raspberry Leaf, Alfalfa and Peppermint, it makes a powerful immune supporting and illness preventing remedy.

− Elderberry

Well known for supporting the body, especially during flu. You can find conventionally made elderberry syrups at many stores now, or to save money, make your own.
Another botanical that helps you cope with cold and flu symptoms is elder, also known as black elder. The extract of elderberries has been tested repeatedly and found to shorten the duration of symptoms by as much as 4 days, and the extract has been found effective at fighting up to 10 strains of flu virus. Nearly all of the scientific studies conducted on elderberry have used a commercial product called Sambucol, which is available as a liquid supplement from a number of different companies.

− Ginger

In capsule form, ginger can greatly help with nausea and vomiting associated with the flu. It can also help with high fever and headache. Fresh ginger root can be steeped in boiling water to make a tea that is very effective against sinus symptoms and congestion. Can buy at most supermarkets See how to make a powerful ginger tea here.

– Astragalus

Antiviral and immune strengthening and is an “adaptogen.” Meaning it adapts to what you need to protect you. Although in Chinese medicine astragalus root is traditionally added to soup, the easiest way to take the herb is in pill form. If you’re constantly exposed to germs, consider taking 200 milligrams twice a day throughout the winter. If you’re anticipating a one-time assault—for example, during a plane ride—start supplementing just a few days in advance with the same dose. In Herbal Antibiotics, author Stephen Harrod Buhner recommends a daily pot of tea containing 2 to 3 ounces astragalus root. Or, enlist astragalus along with garlic as part of an immune-enhancing soup broth, Buhner suggests. It acts as a great as a preventative since in may take a few weeks to reach it’s full effects.

Teas To Add

– Get Wellness Tea

This tea called “Get Wellness” from the repubic of tea is a great blend of some of my favorite herbs – organic Rooibos, Echinacea, astragalus and ashwagandha (also known as Indian Ginseng). Simply brew, sip, and stay strong.

Has lots of vitamins including vitamin C and antioxidants.

– Garlic Tea

For sore throats and upper respiratory infections: a clove of garlic, 1/4 tsp cayenne, 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice in boiling water, add up to 1 tsbsp raw local honey to taste. Sometimes I put apple cider vinegar in it too. Good for whooping cough, and can add elderberry syrup.

– Yarrow

Unsurpassed for flu and fever, and great for children. If used abundantly in tea or tincture at the beginning of an illness, it will usually shorten the illness to less than 24 hours. It is especially good for fevers as it induces perspiration and is great for all childhood type illnesses. It is naturally bitter, so it is often good to include peppermint and stevia leaf when making a tea. It is great for the liver and kidneys and supports the endocrine system. Click photos for Yarrow tea on the left and tincture on the right. (I like tea as a preventative and tincture if already sick).

− Chamomile

– An absolute staple, especially for kids. Chamomile calms the nerves, helps children sleep better and reduces inflammation or fever. Soaking a chamomile tea bag in warm water and placing over an eye for 15 minutes every 2 hours will relieve pink eye in less than 24 hours. Chamomile tastes great and is easy to get kids to take.

Essen tial Oils

There are many powerful E.O.’s  for getting over being sick. Most even more powerful than herbs. Click here for a complete list of my favorite E.O.’s  for overcoming cold, flu, fever and more, and how to use them. Here are a few I like:

– Peppermint Oil – Great for all digestive disturbances and for lowering fever.

– Oregano oil – is a potent natural antibiotic and antiviral. More powerful than 12 different antibiotics.

– Thyme Oil – Very effective against cold and flu. Fights infection and is a great expectorant.

– Immunity blend – A blend of 5 EO’s that works great to kill infection especially in the throat. email info@theartofunity.com for links
