1. Don’t use Typical Commercial Shampoo or Conditioners

– Have you tried searching for the hair care products you use on EWG’s cosmetic database? Unfortunately you will most probably be saddened to learn so many popular hair care brands were rated 8-10, showing dangerous levels of toxins! If you are using commercial brands aim for hair care products that are all below a rating of 3 on the EWG cosmetic database. Don’t assume if you use a certain brand, your product is safe especially if it says all-natural.

– Vote with your dollars! Stop supporting companies that are harming the environment, your family and most importantly your own body with toxic chemicals!

2. Get a Shower Filter

Many times after using a shower filter for the first time people tell me they feel clean for the first time in their life, Why?
1. More chlorine enters the body through skin absorption and inhalation while showering than through drinking tap water.
2. Because of chlorine, showering in tap water has harsh, drying effects on skin and hair and contributes to pre-mature aging.
3. In an eight minute shower, more chlorine is absorbed than drinking a gallon of tap water.
4. Chlorine is a suspected cause of breast cancer. Women suffering from breast cancer are all found to have 50-60% more chlorine in their breast tissue than healthy women.

See my blog on shower filters here for more info.

3. Use a Boar Bristle Brush

After detangling with a wide tooth brush or comb use a boar bristle rush to redistributes the natural oils through your hair, strengthening and shinning.

4. Eating Foods Rich in Omega 3’s

And foods that contain all the essential amino acids. These are foods such as chia seeds, hemp seeds, quinoa, and flaxseeds. Your hair is made up of protein, getting all the essential amino acids will help it get stronger and grow more lustrous

– Also supplement with omega 3’s, such as cod liver oil. Animal-based omega-3 fats: Omega-3 fats help to normalize skin lipids and prevent dehydration in the cells. This keeps skin and hair strong and full of moisture. Fatty acid deficiency can manifest in a variety of ways, but skin problems such as eczema, thick patches of skin, and cracked heels are common. Plus, omega-3 fats may have an anti-inflammatory effect that can help to calm irritated skin, giving you a clear, smooth complexion.
To get them in food the best resource is Wild caught Alaskan Salmon, see my blog on salmon here.

5. Eat Food with Silica

This is found in cucumbers, cabbage and celery are great to improve elasticity of hair preventing split ends! Joy McCarthy, a registered holistic nutritionist recommends to eat lots of dark leafy greens like Kale that provide Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Iron which are critical for healthy, strong and shiny hair. She also says to eat lots of legumes too! Brittle hair is often caused by a deficiency in biotin which is found in beans. The fats in avocados’ are healthy as well.

6. Sleeping on a 100% Silk Pillowcase & Eyemask

Not only will this help you prevent you from getting bed head – it will help you get less wrinkles on your face. Silk will not absorb the moisture from your skin and hair like other fabrics will. This can cause premature aging and other skin conditions. Using silk can avoid this and reduce split ends and bed head too. The holistic silk eye mask is the ideal eye mask for sleeping. Studies have shown that pure silk contains many amazing properties that prevent sleep lines from forming as well as hair falling out.
• It’s Super comfortable and works.
• An Ancient Beauty Secret – Eastern Anti-Aging- Silk proteins are shown to improve skin regeneration, increase skin hydration and prevent moisture loss.
• Silk is also hypoallergenic, antibacterial & anifungal. I recommend the black one.

– Pillow Cases

• 100% mulberry silk, (click photo for link) super soft and smooth, hypoallergenic, natural and breathable fibers
• Anti-Aging & Hair Frizz – anti wrinkle skin care product which stop your face and hair from drying out.

Experts say your pillowcase can take moisture away from your body which, in turn, can age skin. A silk pillowcase can fight this problem. Silk contains amino acids that are very similar to those found in moisturizers. They actually don’t draw moisture from your face the way other pillowcases can.
And! Silk pillowcases do good things for your hair too. It keeps your blow-dries longer, prevents hair styles from becoming a mess, and prevents tangles and knots with curls. Silk is known to cause less breakage of hair (which can cause split ends) because it is naturally a smoother surface. Cotton is said to make your hair static-ey and cause bunching and knots.

7. Drink Plenty of Water

Dry, full and brittle hair is a sign of dehydration. See my blog here on water and how much to drink for optimal health.

8. Use Ess ential Oils on Your Scalp

– Essen tial oils for scent or to treat a problem if desired – Melaluca (Tea Tree) and Lavender are great to help against for psoriasis and dandruff, and rosemary is good for healing the scalp and to help promote hair growth.

– FDA regulation no longer allows recommendation of these oils, please email me at info@theartofunity.com for private info on how I use these oils and links for brands I like.

9. Oil Hair Masks

And finally, if you are really determined to take a good care of your hair, try doing good, deep conditioning hair masks regularly, preferably once a week or at least once every two weeks. You can do warm oil treatments using coconut oil, castor oil or olive oil and honey. Trying the different oils will allow you to know which is best for your hair type. (click photos for links)

Blow dryers, products, heat and weather take a toll on our locks. This is perfect for repairing and moisturizing damaged hair. Just mix one tablespoon of organic coconut oil, (or the other oils) and one tablespoon of organic raw honey. Mix the ingredients together and to help your hair follicles open up, heat the mixture up on a stovetop in a small sauce pan.

The mask can be applied to dry or wet hair, although it’s easier to apply to wet hair. Have a towel around your neck to protect your clothes while applying the mask. Section your hair off and apply generously from top to bottom, focusing on my ends where most damage occurs. Wrap your hair in a bun and let the mask soak in for 30-40 minutes. Wash the mask out in the shower using your regular shampoo and conditioner routine and suddenly – Soft, smooth, healthy hair.

  1. Salmon – rich in protein, vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids, salmon is the natural choice for strong, lustrous hair. Your body is unable to make omega-3 so it depends on you to feed it enough. Other good sources are avocados, pumpkin seeds and walnuts.
  2. Walnuts – rich in biotin, vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids – the only nut with a good amount – this simple food protects your cells from sun damage. Walnut oil is excellent in dressing or used over steamed vegetables.
  3. Oysters – abundant in zinc, three ounces provide almost 500% of the recommended daily value. Also high in protein, oysters help your body replace the hair you lose naturally. Hair is after all approximately 97% protein! Zinc deficiency has been linked to balding. Other good sources are eggs, lean beef and poultry.
  4. Sweet Potatoes – rich in beta carotene which your body converts to vitamin A, these root vegetables are an excellent source of a vitamin that every single cell in your body needs. Other good sources are carrots, spinach, apricots and cantaloupe.
  5. Blueberries – vitamin C ensures scalp circulation and follicle blood vessel health. There are few sources as high in this important vitamin as these tiny berries. Deficiency causes weak hair and leads to breakage and slow growth. Other foods with strong vitamin C content are tomatoes, strawberries and kiwis.

Treating your scalp and hair by eating the right foods means you nourish it from the inside out. This means better results for longer.
