Bladderwrack (seaweed)

– Drink a gallon of spring water per day – or filtered – I prefer zero water filter if you can’t get to a spring. Many of these foods and herbs act as diuretics and force the excretion of toxins through urination. This action supports kidney health by clearing the kidneys of toxins. It is important to drink adequate amounts of water when taking diuretics so you don’t become dehydrated. http://www.naturallifeenergy.com/alkaline-water-benefits/

Do Not Eat:

  • Anything not on the list above
  • No animal products, no dairy, no fish, no alcohol, no fried foods
  • No hybrid foods such as wheat, garlic, carrots, celery, broccoli, potatoes, rice, aloe vera, wheat grass, spinach, lemons, cauliflower, turmeric, beets, peppermint, beans, garlic, corn, tofu, all seedless fruits, and most nuts
  • No GMO’s
  • No canned or seedless fruits or vegetables
  • No microwaving foods

Basic Guidelines

Sebi divides all foods into six categories: live, raw, dead, hybrid, genetically modified or drugs. His diet emphasizes live and raw foods, which he terms “electric foods.” According to Sebi, these foods are alkaline and can help heal the body of the effects of “dead,” or supposedly acidic foods, which include all meat, poultry, seafood, products containing a leavening agent like yeast, synthetic or processed items, alcohol, sugar, iodized salt or anything fried. On the plan, you’ll avoid all seedless fruits, insect- or weather-resistant crops like corn or certain tomatoes, and anything with added vitamins or minerals. Instead, you’ll eat plain ripe fruit; nonstarchy vegetables, especially leafy greens; raw nuts and nut butters; and grains like quinoa, rye or kamut.

Sample Daily Menu

Breakfast on Sebi’s recommended diet might consist of a breakfast shake made from unsweetened almond butter, pure maple syrup, almond milk, powdered sea moss, vanilla extract, and cinnamon or cooked cream of rye paired with a cup of herbal tea such as chamomile or red raspberry. Lunch could be a pasta salad containing chopped fresh vegetables and spelt noodles tossed with a dressing made from almond milk and olive oil. For dinner, you might have a vegetable mushroom soup with a large green salad or a vegetable stir-fry on wild rice.

Possible Disadvantages

Because the Sebi diet strictly reduces or eliminates whole categories of food, you may become deficient in essential nutrients like iron, calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B-12 and omega-3 fatty acids unless you plan your daily diet extremely carefully and consume dietary supplements regularly. Sebi claims that his diet works because it’s not germs that cause illness and infection, but a buildup of mucus that can only be rectified by his advised alkaline plan. There is no research to support the idea that mucus cleansing cures disease, and Sebi, who was not medically trained, does not offer any clinical test results, only anecdotal evidence. Even if you do start the plan, it may be hard to maintain around friends or family members who don’t have the same dietary restrictions.

More on Hybrid foods:

He says carrots, celery, broccoli, potatoes, rice, aloe vera, wheat grass, spinach, lemons, cauliflower, turmeric, beets, peppermint, beans, garlic, all seedless fruits, most nuts, soy and tofu, and any other hybrid food is acidic and poisonous to the body. He calls rice and beans hog food and not meant to be consumed by humans. He says spinach has the same nutritional value as eating paper. He claims that every hybrid plant is man-made and acidic. He claims all hybrids have starch in them and that starch is poison. He says eating starch is literally like eating glue. He claims all heirloom natural plants which are made from nature and not man. He says these are what we should be eating and are alkaline.

What people also don’t realize is almost every banana, grape, orange, apple, and pear just to name a few foods is a hybrid. Just because a food is a hybrid doesn’t necessarily mean they are bad.

Avoid all empty carb foods – soda, any concentrated sugars (maltose, fructose, corn syrup, white sugar), white flour, processed and packaged foods, preservatives (MSG, food coloring, benzoate) Mayonnaise, soy products, cereal, ice cream and other candies

At level 5 acidic fruits should be avoided – plume, cranberry, prune, date, guava, pineapple, dried fruit, oranges.

Food combining: (See my full blog on Food combining here)

  • Combine green vegetables with all foods.
  • Any nuts eaten should be soaked overnight to ensure alkalinity and sprouted when possible.
  • Fruits digest quickly and should be combined properly eaten to prevent fermentation.
  • Melons should always be eaten alone
  • Sub-acid fruits with acid and sweet fruits (acid refers to ph of the fruit)
  • Example of sub-acid fruits: apples, papaya, grapes, mangoes etc.
  • Example of acid fruits: grapefruits, pineapple, oranges etc.
  • Examples of sweet fruits: bananas, raisin, apricot etc.
  • When drinking liquids, be sure to wait at least 15 minutes before and after eating.  Drinking liquids while eating foods causes improper food digestion, leading to dietary diseases.

Poor Food Combinations are:

  • Proteins (nuts, seeds) with starches (Bread, potatoes, pasta, yams, squash etc)
  • Proteins, starches, vegetables with fruits
  • Acid and sweet fruits
  • Melons and other fruits

How to start the Level V (Dr. Sebi Diet) inexpensively:

First buy mushrooms, lettuce (not iceberg), cherry or roma tomatoes, onions, yellow squash, coriander, parsley, zucchini, prickly pear, etc.

We also want to buy some fruits and so we choose small bananas, mangoes, peaches. and oranges and limes. If in season we will buy some seeded watermelons and grapes.

Now we need to buy some chickpeas and flours.  We settle on spelt and Kamut flours and buy some Kamut pasta too.

We need some walnuts, hemp or Brazil nuts for milk to make our smoothies with.  So although we did not buy everything, we have enough to begin our protocol.  So for less than $100 we are stocked and ready to go.

Extras because we have a few dollars more

We find that we have a few dollars more and so we buy some olive oil and avocados. While recipes can be made without these things, many recipes will call for some oils. To sweeten recipes we will use date sugar.

Herbs – Which are required?

If we are on a budget then ordering from Dr. Sebi’s store may not be possible.  If we do order, it will not be the therapeutic packages which cost $750 to $1500.  We want to order enough herbs to get by on.  So what are the main herbs?

Sea Moss or Sea Moss powder.  Raw is best and try to buy wildcrafted.
Bladderwrack root and powder

If you have the bladderwrack powder and the seamoss powder you can make the bromine plus mixture sold at Dr. Sebi’s store.  You need 50% of each and 4 capsules a day.  You will see links below for each.

We need some herbal teas.  Some of my favorites are

  • Burdock
  • Dandelion
  • Red Raspberry
  • Elderberry

If you are on a budget this would be enough to get you in good shape.  The elderberry and burdock will help to move the mucus out of your body.

For colon cleansing we will need some cascas sagrada and rhubarb root.  You will want to take two capsules of each and no more than 7 days in a row.

If you want to make some of the remedies that the Sebians order then go to the Products page and see the ingredients in each protocol.  Remember to use 50% of each.

More about the Do Not Eat Foods for Dr. Sebi:

Mucus and Pus-forming foods:

List of Pus, Acid, and Mucus Forming Foods

What foods are pus, mucus, and acid-forming? In the Mucusless Diet Healing System, Prof. Arnold Ehret asserts that pus and mucus-forming foods are the foundation of human illness and should not be eaten. In short, pus and mucus-forming foods include meat, poultry, dairy, grains, starches, and fats.

The word “mucusless,” or mucus-free, refers to foods that are not mucus-forming. Such foods digest without leaving behind a thick, viscous, slimy substance called mucus. These foods include all kinds of fat-free, and starchless, fruits and vegetables.

All foods that are pus/mucus-forming are acid-forming.

Pus often refers to a thick white, yellowish, or greenish opaque liquid produced in infected tissue, consisting of dead white blood cells, bacteria, tissue debris, and serum. It also refers to the substance that dead animal flesh is chemically changed to after being consumed or while rotting in one’s digestive tract. The ingestion of meat and dairy products create pus residue in the body, while starchy and fatty foods are mucus-forming.

It must be emphasized that not all of these foods are forbidden on the Mucusless Diet as a Healing System. Ehret’s TRANSITION DIET will show you how to use less harmful mucus-forming foods to get off of the worst ones. Pus and Very Mucus-forming foods should be avoided from the beginning if possible. But Moderately or Slightly mucus-forming items may be used effectively during the transition. See the TRANSITION DIET section of the Mucusless Diet or Spira Speaks for more details:

What are Deceptive Mucus-Formers?

Here is a list of foods that many people do not realize create mucus:

  • Rice (great for creating glue to bind books, bad for the transition to a mucus-free diet)
  • Avocados (fatty item that may be used in the transition, but are highly addictive. Although technically a fruit, if used it is best to combine them with a mucus-free combination salad or vegetables to aid elimination. However, it is recommended to stay away from them if you are not already stuck to them.)
  • Nuts (Mucus-forming, but may be used on the transition. It is best to eat with dried fruits like raisins to aid with elimination.)
  • Plantains (Starchy)
  • Tofu (Slimy and mucus-forming.)
  • Un-ripened fruits like green bananas (the riper the fruit you eat the better).
  • Corn (It does not eliminate well. When cooked, corn becomes mushy and slimy in the intestines.)
  • Corn chips (Some people use them on the transition, but they are very addictive and do not eliminate well)
  • Beans (They are starchy and mucus-forming. But, they may be used sparingly on the transition within close proximity to green-leafy salads)
  • Starchy Vegetables (Some vegetables are starchy and mucus-forming in raw or cooked forms, such as white potatoes. But, many other vegetables, such as sweet potatoes, become almost mucus-free (starchless) after proper cooking.

Books on the Dr. Sebi Diet:
