Benefits of different coconuts
Coconuts you can get in stores typically come in three types:
– Mature brown coconuts
– Young Thai coconut
– Caribbean coconuts (green when fresh and brown when older)
I always prefer to get the young coconuts (Thai and Caribbean) over a mature ones because:
– There is more coconut water
– It’s easier to get the meat
– Young one’s are easier to open
– Higher nutritional value
The advantage of the mature coconuts is that there is more meat.
Problems with young Thai coconuts:
They strip off the outside before shipping to the US, which opens them up to oxidation and bacteria so they did them in chemicals to avoid this.
To avoid this, always look for organic, non-dipped or sprayed, and when you open them leave the plastic on except for the top.
I personally don’t think the chemicals enter into the water, unless the coconut is old, soft, or leaking.
This website shows how after dipping in black dye for 3 hours and the dye did not seep past the seed where the water and meat are.
Caribbean Coconuts are my favorite here in the US:
But for this reason my favorites are these green
ones. These are not easy to get unless you live somewhere that they grow such as Thailand or the Caribbean because within a week or two, like all fresh fruit, these will start to go bad.
I get these from shipped fresh from this organic farm in Florida:

Why not bottled coconut water?
– Most all of them are pasteurized killing the enzymes and a lot of the vitamins and minerals.
– There is also no way of knowing if they are using young coconut or mature coconut water. So it might start out with less nutrients.
– They often have sugar and other added ingredients that are toxic or worthless for you and can upset your digestion such as caregeenen.
If coconut water does not need to be refrigerated, it usually means it has been pasteurized. See chart below for best options.
Benefits of Coconut Water & Coconut Milk
- They have been shown to help with:

• Its great to put on your skin either topically and good for your skin when you drink it.

If you are going to buy it in a bottle look for organic, cold pressed, no added ingredients and not pasteurized. I would not bother getting it if it’s sweetened, concentrated or flavored with other juices or anything else since you lose the nutritional value.
The only brand I like is (click photo for link)
If you buy canned coconut milk, avoid cans made with BPA. The only coconut milk I like is:
